When a client reaches out with a “test” project, the goal isn’t just to deliver a good edit—it’s to demonstrate that you can handle the unexpected. This product review for a high-end fire pit was a classic case of technical hurdles meeting high creative expectations. The client, Richard Davies of the “Break It Yourself” channel, needed a sophisticated, high-paced edit that felt authentic to his brand but elevated by the high-end B-roll and speed-ramp transitions he favors. When we encountered severe performance issues due to the camera’s HEVC codec, our priority shifted to transparent communication and finding a technical solution that didn’t compromise the final quality. We didn’t just edit; we engineered a workflow adjustment to save the project, turning a technical bottleneck into a foundation for a long-term professional partnership.

“Break It Yourself” thrives on raw, authentic content. Richard’s audience expects honest hands-on reviews, practical advice, and real-world results. As the channel grew, so did the production ambition. Armed with a Sony a7s III, Richard wanted to push his visual storytelling further—mimicking the dynamic, cinematic styles of creators like Peter McKinnon and RCLifeOn.
He needed an editor who could integrate engaging B-roll, manage high-quality audio commentary, and build polished branding elements. The goal was to find an efficient, long-term post-production partner who could match his workflow, understand his aesthetic, and free him from the editing bay so he could stick to an aggressive 2021 content calendar.
The project faced two primary hurdles:
Creative Alignment: Bridging the gap between a standard DIY edit and a high-end, cinematic product review (mimicking styles like Peter McKinnon and RCLifeOn) while keeping the content grounded.
The HEVC Technical Bottleneck: The raw footage was shot in a high-compression HEVC codec that caused extreme performance degradation in Adobe Premiere Pro. Standard conversion tools failed, threatening to derail the project timeline during a critical holiday release window.
Empathy and clear communication are the foundation of our agency. Instead of hiding the delay, we immediately updated Richard on the HEVC compatibility issue. We adapted our pipeline on the fly, utilizing DaVinci Resolve to transcode the raw footage—a 10-hour processing detour that ultimately provided the stable files needed to execute a flawless, intricate edit in Premiere Pro.
Creatively, we worked closely with Richard’s assets. We crafted custom speed ramps and seamlessly integrated new “burned grass” B-roll alongside perfectly timed audio commentary. To upgrade his channel’s branding, we sourced a premium After Effects end-screen template from Envato Elements, carefully customizing the highlight colors to perfectly match his signature orange and black logo. To make the revision process effortless for him, we introduced Frame.io, allowing Richard to leave time-stamped, on-screen feedback directly on the video draft.
The Breeo X Series review was delivered in stunning 4K, hitting every creative mark and proving that a remote editing team can perfectly capture a creator’s personal style. Beyond the video itself, this project showcased the true value of partnering with a professional agency:
Proactive Technical Consulting: We didn’t just fix the immediate editing problem; we fixed the production pipeline. We provided Richard with a customized recording guide for his Sony a7s III, advising him on the exact camera settings (24-30fps for talking head shots, 60-120fps for slow-motion B-roll) to eliminate HEVC editing bottlenecks in the future.
Streamlined Collaboration: By integrating Frame.io into the workflow, we demonstrated how painless and efficient remote feedback could be, saving the client even more time.
Brand Elevation: The customized animations and cinematic pacing elevated the channel’s perceived production value while staying completely true to its trusted, authentic roots.
What started as a single test project with a tight timeline and a major technical challenge laid the foundation for a highly efficient, ongoing weekly partnership built on trust, quality, and mutual respect.
